OREF Announces 2017 Research Grants, Awards

On March 14, 2017, the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) announced the recipients of 41 research grants and program awards totaling nearly $1 million. Additional grants, including collaborative research agenda grants, will be awarded throughout 2017. Highlights
Research grants and program awards funded include the following:

  • One Career Development Grant, made possible in part by support from the Dr. Dane and Mrs. Mary Louise Miller Endowment Fund and the Dr. Zachary B. and Mrs. Kathleen Friedenberg Endowment Fund (Recipient to be named)
  • One OREF Prospective Clinical Research Grant to Andrew Schoenfeld, MD
  • One Clinical Research Award to Henrik Malchau, MD, PhD
  • Three Research Grants—to Roman Eliseev, MD, PhD, Eric Smith, MD, and one other to be named, made possible by support from the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF), the Dr. Victor and Mrs. Harriet Goldberg Endowment Fund, and the Dr. and Mrs. Charles Rockwood Family Endowment Fund
  • One OREF Mentored Clinician Scientist Grant to Nicholas Bern­thal, MD
  • One Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS)/OREF Post-Doctoral Fellowship Grant to Neha Shashank Dole, PhD
  • Two New Investigator Grants to Patrick Curran, MD, and another recipient to be named, made possible by support from the Mahendra Patel, MD Research Fund
  • Seven Resident Clinician Scientist Training Grants to Adnan N. Cheema, MD; Charles Hannon, MD; Alexander Jinnah, MD; Devon Nixon, MD; Alexander Rascoe, MD; Dean Wang, MD; and Megan R. Wolf, MD, made possible by Thomas P. Sculco, MD; the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF), the Ira A. Roschelle Family Foundation, the John T. Hocker Charitable Foundation, and the UConn Founders Endowment
  • Ten Resident Research Project Grants made possible by support from Mr. James G. Borovsky and Dr. Shepard R. Hurwitz, MD; the Bernard R. Bach Jr, MD Mentor Campaign, Aircast Foundation, Exactech, and the Western Orthopaedic Foundation
  • One ORS/OREF Distinguished Investigator Award to Clare Rimnac, PhD
  • Together with the AAOS and the ORS, OREF will support two valuable grant-related programs in 2017: The New Investigator Workshop and the Clinician Scholar Development Program
  • Four ORS/OREF Travel Awards in Orthopaedic Research Translation
  • Three Regional Program Grants

Congratulations
OREF received 244 grant applications OREF’s Peer Review Committee volunteers evaluated the scientific merit of each application through a rigorous peer-review process modeled after the National Institutes of Health. The applications were then ranked, and funding decisions were made by the Research Grants Committee in January. OREF’s Board of Trustees congratulates the 2017 grant recipients!
