2008 has been a pretty good year for Kaye E. Wilkins, MD. In just three months, his good works have earned him two national titles: the 2008 AAOS Humanitarian Award winner and American Airline’s “Road Warrior” of the year.
In keeping with the selflessness he’s shown over the past 30 years, Dr. Wilkins donated all of his winnings—1 million American Airlines Advantage air miles and 2 million Hilton Honors bonus points—to the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA), which will use the travel and hotel stays to help physicians visit the United States for training seminars.
“I just knew that the use of these miles and points could help many doctors come to the United States for training and that, ultimately, people could get the medical help they need in underdeveloped countries,” Dr. Wilkins said of the donation. “POSNA can get so much more out of this wonderful prize than I could ever get out of it.”
Dr. Wilkins beat out nearly 7,000 other applicants to win the “Road Warrior” grand prize by providing insights about his life on the road, photographs, and even a haiku. He was featured in a “007”-like pose on the cover of the Jan. 16, 2007, American Way, the in-flight magazine of American Airlines.
