OREF expects “bright future” with new CEO

Sharon Mellor, PhD, CAE, has extensive fundraising, executive experience

“She has everything the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) was looking for in a chief executive officer,” said Ramon L. Jimenez, MD, search committee chair and OREF board president-elect, of Sharon K. Mellor, PhD, CAE. The OREF board of trustees recently appointed Dr. Mellor as OREF’s new CEO, and she assumed her new role on Dec. 1, 2011.

“We are proud to welcome Dr. Mellor as OREF’s new CEO,” said S. Terry Canale, MD, OREF board president. “With her skills and proven success in fundraising and resource development, OREF is poised for a bright future.”

“We were particularly impressed with her emphasis on optimizing the effectiveness of donor contributions and in developing support for all sectors of the orthopaedic community,” said Dr. Jimenez.

Dr. Mellor is eager to take the helm. She plans to work with partner organizations and raise the level of philanthropy throughout orthopaedics.

“In addition,” said Dr. Mellor, “I look forward to engaging in a dialogue with orthopaedic surgeons rather than just telling them about the wonderful things we’re doing.

“I believe we have really strong staff support,” she added. “I look forward to looking at new ideas.”

She emphasized that “giving out money is every bit as important as raising money” for OREF.

“I’m very anxious to make sure we’re good stewards of the donations we receive and that we’re funding research and educational opportunities that have the most benefit for orthopaedic surgeons and their patients,” she said.

“OREF is a marvelous organization,” said Dr. Mellor. “I look forward to continuing its growth.”
