Meeting your year-end CME deadlines

Take advantage of these online options from the AAOS

As 2011 winds down, it’s time to check the number of continuing medical education (CME) credits you have for the year. If you’re facing a year-end deadline for maintenance of certification or licensure, the AAOS can help you accumulate the credits you need. The Academy offers a number of online options to make earning CME credits easy and efficient and minimize disruption to your practice.

All AAOS members have complimentary access to the Academy’s
OrthoPortal website, giving you access to hundreds of credit hours through the Orthopaedic Knowledge Online (OKO) section. The Continuing Medical Education area on OKO offers several online CME-rich activities based on clinical topics covered on the site. These learning modules span the range of orthopaedic specialties and each provides from 1 to 4 CME credits. In addition to OKO-based CME, the OrthoPortal also offers access to webinars, Journal of the AAOS (JAAOS) CME, and some free CME activities.

now offers a 100-question self-assessment exam (SAE) for which you can earn up to 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Each semiannual SAE is based on the content from six consecutive JAAOS issues. Visit
www.aaos.org/jaaoscme to begin earning credits. Credits earned by completing these Scored and Recorded SAEs can be applied to the mandated requirements established by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Maintenance of Certification (MOC™) process and will count toward the CME credit requirement, as well.

The Academy’s popular webinars are a convenient way to earn CME; you can participate in a live program or view an archived recording online. For a listing of upcoming events, visit the online CME Course Calendar at

Past webinars can be found on the OrthoPortal website under Continuing Medical Education. You can earn from 1.5 to 2.25 credits per webinar, and some webinars are free to members.

Self-assessment exams
The Academy offers 11 online SAEs. These can be taken as either self-scored with immediate access to answers or as scored and recorded. For details on the 10 Orthopaedic Special Interest Self-Assessment Examinations (OSIEs) and the OKU 10 Self-Assessment Examination, visit

The exams are also available in print format through AAOS Customer Service, (800) 626-6726, or through the Academy’s online store, www.aaos.org/self_assess

Transcript service
Organize your CME experiences with the free AAOS transcript service that automatically logs CME credits that you’ve earned through Academy-sponsored courses, multimedia programs, and exams. You can view your transcript at

Did you earn CME credits from other sources? You can add them to the online record, but you must retain your documentation from those organizations.

MOCTM CME deadlines are approaching (See “Upcoming deadlines for ABOS Maintenance of Certification” page 11). To learn the requirements and deadlines specific to your certification date, visit the ABOS online at www.abos.org
