Introducing Surgeon Stories and Ortho-pinions—new ways to get involved

The Academy’s “A Nation in Motion” campaign has been praised by members, patients, and the public. The campaign’s website——serves as a hub of bone and joint health information, with more than 550 colorful patient success stories.

These patient stories continue to inspire visitors to return to the site and to recommend it to others. The AAOS has received emails and calls from people who say this site has helped them mentally prepare for an upcoming orthopaedic procedure or learn about a family member’s orthopaedic condition.

These moving patient stories deliver an important message: Orthopaedic care is the reason why former patients are now able to do the activities they love. Now, you, as an orthopaedic surgeon, can use the site to tell your patients and others just why you went into the business of keeping this nation in motion.

Share Surgeon Stories
Behind those scrubs, orthopaedic surgeons are caring, compassionate, dedicated, and interesting people. The AAOS would like visitors to to know that, in a very personal way. A new section of the website, Surgeon Stories, is now available and is an opportunity for you to share your story and promote your practice, helping to create a vivid portrait of the diversity of orthopaedics.

When you visit the website, you’ll see a “Share Your Surgeon Story” button. Click on it, and you’ll be prompted to answer the following questions:

  • I became an orthopaedic surgeon because…
  • What is the most rewarding part of being an orthopaedic surgeon?
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • In what volunteer activities or efforts do you engage that mean the most to you and those you serve?

You will also be able to upload a photo that depicts you engaged in an activity outside the office. These stories and photos will help showcase orthopaedic surgeons not only as physicians, but as the remarkable, fascinating, “everyday people” that make up the profession.

Share your Ortho-pinions
Another opportunity to get involved challenges you to be a surgeon columnist. Ortho-pinions, an orthopaedic surgeon-authored column on the A Nation in Motion website, are 400–1,000 word essays about various aspects of orthopaedic practice, aimed at the patient/public audience. Columns narrate common bone-and-joint scenarios.

Submissions should have a light, friendly tone geared toward a curious patient or neighbor. Choose a topic that comes up in practice, life, or medicine that reflects the well-roundedness and the different specialties that make up orthopaedics. Ortho-pinions illustrate the many dimensions of the people, like you, who practice this specialty.

Topics that might make good Ortho-pinions can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Will shoulder slouching lead to osteoporosis?
  • My cast got wet, now what?
  • How can you treat a sprain vs. a strain?
  • Will cracking my knuckles really lead to arthritis?
  • Is it a fracture or a break?

All Ortho-pinions will go through an editorial review process by members of the AAOS Communications Cabinet. For full Ortho-pinion guidelines and to submit your Ortho-pinion, visit

Continue to share your patient stories
If you haven’t already, choose patients whose stories embody A Nation in Motion and invite them to submit their stories. Alternatively, you could ask them for permission to use their stories and you or someone on your staff can submit the stories on their behalf.

Market your participation
Once your patients submit stories or you have submitted your personal orthopaedic surgeon story or Ortho-pinion to the campaign’s website, post links on your practice website and social media channels so new patients or web visitors can read about you and your success stories.

The time is now to submit a Surgeon Story or Ortho-pinion. The AAOS hopes to have at least 100 members—whether fellows, candidate members, or residents—share their Surgeon Story or submit an Ortho-pinion by Dec. 31, 2012. These new elements will add another layer of depth and substance to this campaign and will be launched at the 2013 Annual Meeting in Chicago.
