AAOS Embarks on Pilot CME Course Concept

Gerald R. Williams Jr, MD

In January and February 2013, the AAOS will pilot test a new continuing medical education (CME) course concept designed by the CME Courses Committee. Underwritten by a grant from the AAOS Education Enhancement Fund (AEEF), 100 Academy members will have the opportunity to participate in the 8-week pilot program free of charge.

Under the leadership of Amar S. Ranawat, MD, and Scott M. Sporer, MD, course codirectors, participants will take part in webinars, small group online discussions, and individual learning activities focused on the adult hip. William J. Hozack, MD, and Michael A. Mont, MD, as members of the CME Courses Committee, will provide oversight and peer review.

The course schedule includes four webinars, two small group, faculty-led case discussions, pre- and post-tests, assigned readings, review of surgical and cadaver video demonstrations, and multimedia cases. Participants will be required to prepare a case report, which will be reviewed and discussed by small groups led by members of the course faculty. A course blog may also be used to increase interaction between participants and faculty.

Course participants will receive up to a maximum of 17 CME credits and will be required to complete a standard course evaluation survey and provide additional feedback about their experience through an interview.

Interested individuals must complete an application form, available through the course website (www.aaos.org/courses). Course participants will be selected by the CME Courses Committee. The deadline for applications is Oct. 15, 2012; participants will be notified of their selection in November. For more information about the course and to apply, visit www.aaos.org/courses

This pilot concept is another innovative educational program from the AAOS and is funded by the AEEF. The CME Courses Committee looks forward to learning about its value for the future of CME.
