Steve & Cokie Roberts to Speak at Annual Meeting

Husband-and-wife journalists Steve and Cokie Roberts are the presidential guest speakers for the 2014 AAOS Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Both are veterans of the Washington political scene: he is a leading political pundit; she is a political commentator for ABC News.

The duo will present “A View from Washington,” on March 13 at the Morial Convention Center. Afterward, the couple will respond to questions from the audience.

Prime-time political analysts
Mr. Roberts began his journalism career with The New York Times in 1964 after graduating from Harvard. During his 25 years with the newspaper, he served as bureau chief in Los Angeles and Athens and as a Congressional and White House correspondent. He was a senior writer at U.S. News for 7 years, where he is now a contributing editor.

Mr. Roberts covered many of the major events of his time, including the antiwar movement and student revolts of the 1960s and 1970s, President Reagan’s historic trip to Moscow in 1988, and nine presidential election campaigns.

Mr. Roberts appears regularly on National Public Radio (NPR), CNN’s Reliable Sources, and the ABC radio network. As a teacher, he lectures on American politics and the role of the news media. He is the Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University, where he has taught for the last 13 years.

His many honors include the prestigious Dirksen Award for covering Congress, the Wilbur Award for coverage of religion and politics, the Bender Teaching Award, and four honorary doctorates. He was also named “one of the top 50 journalists” by Washingtonian Magazine.

Ms. Roberts is the senior news analyst for NPR and political commentator for ABC News, providing political analysis for all ABC network news programming. From 1996 to 2002, she co-anchored the weekly ABC News program This Week with Sam Donaldson & Cokie Roberts.

A broadcast journalist for more than 40 years, Ms. Roberts has earned numerous awards including three Emmy awards. In 2000, she was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. She has also been cited as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting by the American Women in Radio and Television.

Ms. Roberts is the author of three books: We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters, and two histories, Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation, and Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation.

She holds more than 20 honorary degrees and serves on the boards of several nonprofit institutions and on the President’s Commission on Service and Civic Participation. In 2008, the Library of Congress named her a “Living Legend,” one of the few Americans to attain the honor.

The couple writes a weekly syndicated newspaper column together and are contributing editors to USA Weekend Magazine. They also wrote the bestselling book From this Day Forward, an account of their more than 40-year marriage and other marriages in American history.
