Advocacy in Action

How the AAOS Office of Government Relations (OGR) is working for you …

  • Strongly advised against and began interfacing with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Relative-value Update Committee about a review of potentially misvalued current procedural terminology codes 27130 (total hip arthroplasty) and 27447 (total knee arthroplasty). These procedures save the U.S. economy a combined $28 billion in lifetime societal costs, and any change to their relative value units could impair patient access to high-quality orthopaedic care.
  • Successfully passed an amendment introduced by the Orthopaedic Section Council at the American Medical Association (AMA) 2018 Interim Meeting. The new policy ensures that AMA will advocate for physician-led (MD or DO) clinical training, supervision, and evaluation for medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Advocated for Stark law reform and the Resident Education Deferred Interest Act alongside Atlanta-based Resurgens Orthopaedics practice and Nth Dimensions women and minority students from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C.
