President’s Symposium Will Explore Generative AI’s Potential in Healthcare

The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has garnered considerable attention and investment. This technology uses machine learning algorithms applied to large volumes of text, audio recordings, or visual data to generate new and remarkably natural, human-like content.

The potential of these tools in healthcare is vast, but the widespread adoption of generative AI requires deep understanding in the realms of translational research; clinical implementation; advocacy; patient safety; ethics; diversity, equity, inclusion; and more.

At the AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting, the President’s Symposium will bring together leaders in the field to explore these issues and perspectives on the current and future applications of generative AI in the healthcare marketplace, with a particular focus on musculoskeletal health.

During Symposium X, titled “Generative Artificial Intelligence: A Technology Set to Transform Musculoskeletal Care?” AAOS President Kevin J. Bozic, MD, MBA, FAAOS, the inaugural chair of the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, will serve as moderator alongside Prakash Jayakumar, MD, PhD, assistant professor of surgery and director of value-based healthcare and outcome measurement, also at Dell Medical School.

The session will feature Joseph H. Schwab, MD, FAAOS, director of spine oncology and director of the Center for Surgical Innovation and Engineering at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles; Joyce Shen, MBA, lecturer in data science and AI at the University of California, Berkeley School of Information and investor in multiple next-generation technologies and AI startups; Jacobien Oosterhoff, MD, PhD, assistant professor in AI for healthcare systems at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands; and Justin Krogue, MD, assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco and clinical scientist in health AI at Google.

Symposium overview
The symposium will provide an overview of the current landscape of generative AI tools, including today’s and tomorrow’s challenges and opportunities, and discuss how the implementation of this technology will drive a new era of health and healthcare for our patients and populations.

“The rapid evolution of generative AI is unprecedented and poised to touch every aspect of our personal and professional lives,” Dr. Bozic said. “This President’s Symposium—the first of its kind—brings together experts in the field both within and outside of orthopaedics. Successful application of this technology demands that we uncover both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as we realize the hope underlying the immense hype behind these transformative tools.”

Symposium X will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024, in Esplanade Ballroom 155. Use the AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting Mobile App to learn more about this event and browse other symposia.
