  • Canada Selected as 2013 Guest Nation

    Maureen Leahy

The AAOS is pleased to announce that Canada will be honored as the Guest Nation at the 2013 Annual Meeting in Chicago. “Canadian and American orthopaedic surgeons have a great deal in common. This is a wonderful opportunity for the two countries to take better advantage of each other’s strengths and work toward cross-border collaboration,” said Geoffrey H. Johnston, MD, FRCPSC, FACS, MBA, president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA).

  • Checking on Audits, Glucosamine, and History

The article “New Medicare Audit Reporting Tool” (September) mentions paybacks to Medicare, but is missing what is really happening in Texas as Obamacare rules have been allowing for huge clawbacks of legitimate cases. The auditors are going through the hospital records for this and last year and retroactively denying the entire total joint case, using no set criteria. I was watching the Olympics this summer with my grandson, when he asked, “Pops, what does that volleyball player have on his arm?” Pops, who is often wrong but never in doubt, informed him that it probably was some tape or a bandage or a removable tattoo or a sticker protesting terrorism or supporting cancer research. Even at age 9, he knew better! I figured it was some form of weird tape job. The next day I saw the same thing, but the colors were now more varied—black, neon blue, green.

  • Art Exhibit Reveals Orthopaedist’s “Journey of Discovery”

    Jennie McKee

“When I drive somewhere to photograph flowers, I get inspired by listening to Beethoven,” said Stuart Green, MD, a Los Angeles-based orthopaedic surgeon and avid photographer. “As I take photographs, I often wear headphones so I can continue to listen to the music.” Beethoven’s influence on Dr. Green was incorporated in his recent photography exhibit, which was displayed from Aug. 11 to Sept. 18, 2012, at an art gallery in Santa Monica, Calif.

The campaign’s website—anationinmotion.org—serves as a hub of bone and joint health information, with more than 550 colorful patient success stories.
