Diversity Programs

Help us support opportunities for surgical bio skills workshops and summer internship programs for female and underrepresented minority medical students. This is an investment in our future. The diversity of the orthopaedic profession must improve to best serve our patients and encourage the best and the brightest to join us.

The Perry Initiative Orthopaedics in Action Curriculum (OiA) Curriculum
In order to reach more students earlier in the talent pipeline, AAOS is seeking funding for a new in-classroom sawbones laboratory module/curriculum kit targeting middle and high school students across the U.S. Administered by The Perry Initiative in collaboration with AAOS, OiA fills a pressing need in STEM classrooms to demonstrate how science and math concepts are used to solve real-world problems; and it satisfies Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core Standards.

The Perry Initiative Medical Student Outreach Program (MSOP)
Help expand an established outreach program designed to engage and excite more female and underrepresented minority medical and pre-med students about orthopaedic medicine. Administered by The Perry Initiative in collaboration with AAOS, these programs are held at major medical/academic centers across the U.S. The curriculum includes lectures, hands-on surgical skills workshops, and mentoring. 70% of the first class of workshop participants successfully matched in orthopaedics or other competitive surgical residencies.

Nth Dimensions | AAOS Orthopaedic Summer Internship Program
Partner in the one of the most comprehensive and effective diversity programs we offer. Administered by Nth Dimensions Educational Solutions in collaboration with AAOS, this intensive eight-week clinical/research internship is especially designed for first year female and underrepresented minority medical students. Scholars shadow a preceptor in clinic/surgery and prepare and present a poster at a national medical meeting. All scholars participate in a program to improve performance on the USMLE Step 1 and attend the AAOS Annual Meeting the following spring.

Information about the 2020 internship program coming soon.
