AAOS-Romania 2017 Shoulder Course Agenda

The 2017 AAOS-Romania Comprehensive Shoulder Program was held in Timisoara, Romania, May 8-12, 2017. This was Year 3 of a three-year program.

The program follows a train-the-trainer model.  In Year 3, eleven local faculty were trained in advanced training by two US faculty, Dr. Guido Marra and Dr. William B. Stetson, over the course of three days. The advanced training included lectures, case-based learning and clinic patient assessment. Local faculty were provided with AAOS materials in preparation.

The US and local faculty then taught a two-day Basic Shoulder Course with 44 participants in attendance. The goal of the course was to provide participants with an introduction to shoulder arthroscopy and arthroplasty.  Participants learned the current techniques used in the surgical management of shoulder trauma, instability and rotator cuff disease.

Participant feedback has been positive over the last three years and this program will serve as a model for future programs.  100% of participants said they would recommend this course to a colleague.  One participant commented, “I think that the 3-year project format was a great idea. The AAOS faculty created a system of teaching which can produce future events.”

This was the final year of the three-year program and it is expected that the trained local faculty will continue to run the course independently.
