Associate Membership – Allied Specialty: The status of Associate Membership - Allied Specialty may be conferred upon distinguished physicians who are not orthopaedic surgeons who hold the degrees of M.D. or D.O. and whose activities, interests and contributions are related to orthopaedic surgery.

Associate Membership – Basic ScienceThe status of Associate Membership-Basic Science may be conferred upon an individual holding a doctorate degree or its equivalent who is engaged in the full time research of basic science related to orthopaedic surgery and who has demonstrated achievement in research and education related to orthopaedic surgery. Applicants in this category must also provide a Curriculum Vitae and bibliography demonstrating recent publications in peer reviewed journals (a minimum of two articles within 3 years prior to application).

Eligibility Requirements: Supporting documents, three letters of recommendation and CV required. Compliance with the AAOS Standards of Professionalism.

Recruitment period: Annually from October through June the following year.

Dues & Membership Cycle: 2020 dues are $183. A one-time mandatory initiation fee of $75 is billed along with dues in October upon acceptance. Cycle runs on calendar year, January 1 – December 31. Associate membership is a continuous membership. Dues are automatically billed every October for the upcoming membership cycle.

Application process: Completion and submission of the Associate Allied Specialty/Basic Science Member application and accompanying documentation during the recruitment period. All applications are reviewed by the Membership Committee and Associate Member status is considered pending until final approval by the AAOS Board of Directors. Applicants are approved and accepted as a “class” each year in October. The full application process can take between 10 and 12 months. See application for specific details and application timeline.
