Associate Membership – Orthopaedic

Class of 2021 Applications Now Open! Deadline: June 30, 2020*

*We are pleased to have you join the AAOS. The Academy is here to support all future members during these challening times. As such, the AAOS has decided to extend the application deadline.

The candidate for this category of membership is a qualified orthopaedic surgeon who, because of exceptional circumstances, does not meet the Fellow - Active requirements.

Eligibility Requirements: For three years immediately prior to induction, devotes his or her medical practice exclusively to orthopaedic surgery or engages in the teaching of orthopaedic surgery or research related to the musculoskeletal system; maintains a full, unrestricted and unlimited license to practice medicine in the United States or Canada in which he or she practices or provide evidence of full-time medical service in the federal government which does not require a medical license; and U.S. trained orthopaedic surgeons who were eligible but did not sit for the ABOS, AOBOS, or RCPSC examination or who failed the examination are explicitly excluded from this membership classification. Internationally-trained orthopaedic surgeons are eligible for this membership classification. Compliance with the AAOS Standards of Professionalism.

Application Process: Completion and submission of the Associate Member Orthopaedic application and accompanying documentation during the recruitment period. All applications are reviewed by the Membership Committee and Associate Member status is considered pending until final approval by the AAOS Board of Directors. Applicants are approved and accepted as a “class” each year in October. The full application process can take 10-12 months.

Recruitment Period: Annually from October through May the following year. 

Dues & Membership Cycle: A one-time mandatory initiation fee billed in October upon acceptance. The annual dues cycle dates are January 1st through December 31st. Associate membership is a continuous membership and dues are automatically billed in October for the upcoming membership cycle.
