As an Emeritus Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
I particularly enjoy the Journal of the AAOS (the yellow journal) for its up-to-date review articles covering both clinical and basic scientific topics. The exceptional quality of these articles reflects the incredible talent within our profession.

If you were mentoring a new member, what important advice would you give them as they progress in their career?
Engagement and a sense of purpose are fundamental to both a fulfilling life and professional success. Build your practice in regions where your expertise is truly needed, and always seek guidance for complex cases. Above all, approach patients and colleagues with humility and respect.

What aspect of retirement surprised you the most?
It shouldn’t have been surprising, but retirement—like every phase of life—is a journey of transitions. Fortunately, settling in Charlottesville, my home for over 30 years, has been a blessing. The community’s rich cultural and natural offerings continue to enhance my life.

I am grateful that our Department Chairman, Dr. Bobby Chhabra, has encouraged me to remain active in academic and social functions. At the same time, I have cultivated relationships outside the university that I share with my wife of 41 years, Jean.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
Ha! Retirement is nothing but spare time. I still love rising early for exercise—hiking, running, cycling, and swimming. Jean and I recently welcomed our third Vizsla, Cody. This time around, I’ve had the opportunity to train and truly enjoy him. Cody is my trusted hiking companion.

Beyond that, I’ve found immense joy in reading books outside of medicine and attending live music performances. Human creativity never ceases to amaze me! And, of course, there’s the never-ending house and yard maintenance—always keeping me grounded. ðŸ˜Š

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know.
Macroeconomics fascinates me—it’s a field that intertwines human behavior, statistics, and global interactions. My favorite blogger in this area is Noah Smith (Noahpinion on Substack).
