The AAOS recognizes the need for focused strategies for safe and effective alleviation of pain and optimal opioid stewardship. In the orthopaedic surgical setting, open, empathic communication between the surgical team, patients, and families helps prepare patients for the pain of recovery from injury or surgery. The AAOS partnered with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) to develop this toolkit that provides clinicians with resources to support that communication and decision-making to help patients get as comfortable as possible, as safely as possible.
