The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) provides education and practice management services to orthopaedic surgeons and allied health care providers. It is the world’s largest medical association of musculoskeletal specialists, serving more than 39,000 members worldwide.
In 2017, the AAOS Board of Directors approved the creation of a Registry Program with the following goals:
- To provide data to inform AAOS guidelines and test performance measures
- To give feedback to providers to continuously improve their practice
- To allow AAOS to define what quality means in a value-based system
- To reduce the reporting burden on physicians
- To help inform gaps in knowledge or areas for further education
Today, the AAOS Registry Program includes the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), the Fracture & Trauma Registry (FTR), the Musculoskeletal Tumor Registry (MsTR), the Shoulder & Elbow Registry (SER), and the American Spine Registry (ASR), a collaboration with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS).
The AAOS Registry Program’s mission is to improve orthopaedic care through the collection, analysis, and reporting of actionable data. We seek to encompass all the musculoskeletal and anatomical areas for orthopaedics through comprehensive data and technology resulting in optimal patient outcomes.

AAOS Registry Oversight Committee
Overseeing the AAOS Registry Program Steering Committees is the Registry Oversight Committee (ROC). The ROC reports to the AAOS Board of Directors and provides guidance and recommendations for all major Registry initiatives.
