Surgical Fixation of a Triphalangeal Thumb
This video demonstrates surgical fixation in a young patient who was born with a triphalangeal thumb and rudimentary pre-axial polydactyly. Triphalangeal thumbs are rare. In the patient presented in this video, the distal portion of the middle phalanx and the proximal portion of the distal phalanx are resected. A Kirschner wire is used to fuse the proximal portion of the middle phalanx and the distal portion of the distal phalanx to create a normal-appearing thumb with two phalanges.
