Report from the AAOS Nominating Committee: Meet the 2024 Slate of Nominees

With great admiration for my colleagues, I am pleased to offer this report on behalf of the AAOS Nominating Committee, which is responsible for selection of the 2024 slate of nominees to the AAOS Board of Directors and American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). Your elected representatives had a full plate of positions to fill and a shorter-than-usual timeframe to accomplish the task. The committee met by video conference, a virtual process that began during the pandemic. To promote free and open discussions, all committee members agreed to and signed a confidentiality agreement.

The committee thoroughly reviewed 39 applications to fill positions of AAOS officers, AAOS board members, and AAOS nominees for ABOS directors. The committee accomplished the evaluation process in two rounds, using ranked criteria submitted anonymously by committee members in each round. The first round measured the strength of candidates’ applications. In the second round, top-ranked officer and board candidates were selected for interviews. ABOS candidates were not included in the interview process and were selected based on strength of application and the desired specialty needs identified by ABOS. All candidate information gathered was then evaluated at a final meeting, with secret ballots used to select the committee’s nominees, listed below.

AAOS officers and board members
The following members were selected as AAOS officers and members of the Board of Directors:

  • Second vice president: Wilford K. Gibson, MD, FAAOS
  • Treasurer-elect: Mininder S. Kocher, MD, MPH, FAAOS
  • Member-at-large (age 45 and over): John T. Gill, MD, FAAOS
  • Member-at-large (under age 45): Sean Tabaie, MD, FAAOS

ABOS nominees
The following members were named as AAOS nominees for directors of the ABOS:

  • Asheesh Bedi, MD, FAAOS
  • Dawn LaPorte, MD, FAAOS
  • Norman Y. Otsuka, MD, FAAOS
  • Marco Rizzo, MD, FAAOS
  • Robert H. Sandmeier, MD, FAAOS
  • Jennifer M. Wolf, MD, FAAOS

Review of nomination process
The committee also reviewed the current process and has made recommendations to the Board of Directors. The committee’s observations were offered to help improve both the application process and the function of the AAOS Nominating Committee.

We want to encourage colleagues to consider service and apply for volunteer leadership positions. In addition, we strongly advocate not only for members to participate in the AAOS Leadership Institute (ALI) but also to put the ALI experience into practice by volunteering within AAOS governance in the future.

Finally, I want to recognize this year’s AAOS Nominating Committee for their outstanding performance and dedication to selecting the best leaders among our colleagues. The AAOS Nominating Committee handled this formidable yet most important task with objectivity, collegiality, and integrity. To complete our work, we also recognize with gratitude the invaluable support of our AAOS staff: Donna Malert, Yasseline Knoke, and Melissa Young. Please offer your own thanks to these dedicated staff and to committee members.

We wish great success to our nominees as they begin their service to AAOS, the profession, and our patients.
