New OrthoInfo podcast expands AAOS patient education offerings

For decades, OrthoInfo has been known as a leading source of orthopaedic patient education, with hundreds of online articles and videos attracting millions of users annually. Building on that success, OrthoInfo recently added a podcast to its multimedia mix.

The OrthoInfo podcast is a monthly series where board-certified orthopaedic surgeons answer frequently asked questions from patients about musculoskeletal issues, treatments, injury prevention, bone and joint health, and more. Each episode tackles a single question and breaks it down for patients in an easy-to-understand manner.

Each episode has its own page on orthoinfo.org. Just as with OrthoInfo text content and videos, AAOS members can “prescribe” podcast episodes to patients who prefer getting their health information in an audio format.

The first three episodes are available now:

When Should I see an Orthopaedic Surgeon?

Shariff K. Bishai DO, FAAOS, and Mary K. Mulcahey, MD, FAAOS, help people with musculoskeletal conditions and symptoms understand why and when to see an orthopaedic surgeon. They also explain what an orthopaedic surgeon does, the orthopaedic subspecialties, and the key differences between orthopaedic surgeons and other healthcare professionals who treat musculoskeletal issues.

Orthobiologics: Are They Right for Me?

Shariff K. Bishai, DO, FAAOS, is joined by world-renowned biologics experts Don Buford, MD, FAAOS, and Scott A. Sigman, MD, FAAOS, for a conversation about the past, present, and future use of biologics to treat orthopaedic conditions and augment surgical repair. The episode is designed to help people who may be curious about or are considering biologic treatments understand what these therapies are, when they can help, and how to tell if a claim about a biologic therapy is too good to be true.

Hip Replacement Surgery: What Can I Expect?

Mary K. Mulcahey, MD, FAAOS, is joined by adult reconstruction surgeon Neil Sheth, MD, FAAOS, to help patients understand whether hip replacement may be a good option for them and what to expect if they have the procedure — including pre-surgical preparation, the day of surgery, return to activity, and long-term outcomes. Dr. Sheth also clarifies when to see a doctor for hip pain and which type of specialist to see initially.
