The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the AAOS 2020 Annual Meeting. As AAOS has converted much of the Annual Meeting into a virtual event, we have created this Special Edition solely covering the meeting, focusing on the reporting that would have appeared in the onsite publication. Our goal for this Special Edition is to keep members informed of orthopaedic advances, study findings, and other Annual Meeting content.

Steven J. Meyer, MD, Receives 2020 Humanitarian Award
Each year, AAOS bestows its Humanitarian Award on a member who has distinguished himself or herself through outstanding musculoskeletal-related humanitarian activities in the United States or abroad. This year’s recipient is Steven J. Meyer, MD, FAAOS, of Dakota Dunes, S.D. Dr. Meyer was recognized for providing health care and human services to underserved populations in Tanzania for more than 20 years.

James A. Hill, MD, FAAOS, of Northwestern University Medicine Feinberg School of Medicine, is the recipient of the Academy’s 2020 Diversity Award.

Carl Deirmengian, MD, Earns Kappa Delta Lanier Award for the First FDA-authorized Diagnostic Test for Orthopaedics
Carl Deirmengian, MD, FAAOS, began his medical education and career at a time when his interest in genomics presented both a challenge and an opportunity. Dr. Deirmengian, orthopaedic surgeon and associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia, received this year’s Kappa Delta Elizabeth Winston Lanier Award.

Braden C. Fleming, PhD, Wins OREF Clinical Research Award for Post-traumatic Osteoarthritis Discoveries
With a background in bioengineering, Braden C. Fleming, PhD, the Lucy Lippitt Professor of Orthopaedics at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital, has spent more than three decades studying soft tissue and joint mechanics to uncover the causes of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA), specific to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and reconstruction.

Kappa Delta Young Investigator Award Goes to Alice Huang, PhD
Before Alice Huang, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and her colleagues began their research, not much was known about the biology of tendons and tendon cell fate. Dr. Huang and colleagues received the 2020 Kappa Delta Young Investigator Award.

Marc Swiontkowski, MD, FAAOS, Receives Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughn Award
When Marc Swiontkowski, MD, FAAOS, began medical school at the University of Southern California in the late 1970s, a procedure called the Judet muscle pedicle graft was the most common technique used in the orthopaedics department for fixation of displaced femoral neck fractures in adult patients. Dr. Swiontkowski, professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, is the 2020 recipient of the Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughn Award for his research that identified the optimal surgical approach for hip fractures, helping to improve patient lives.
