Think about it. In a typical day, we seek orthopaedic information either because we “need” it or because we “want” it. We “need” information for a patient with a complicated diagnosis in clinic, for the next patient in surgery, for the Orthopaedic In-Training Exam, for our Boards, or for Maintenance of Certification. We “want” information for lifelong learning, which is a fundamental tenant of our profession.

OKOJ Welcomes New Topic Ideas

Improving Orthopaedics in Haiti

The rebuilding of Haiti’s orthopaedic infrastructure following the January 2010 earthquake has become a successful work in progress, due in large part to the continued involvement of AAOS and its members. Despite its dense population, Haiti had few trained orthopaedic surgeons at the time of the quake. Strengthening its orthopaedic training program, therefore, has been integral to the rebuilding process.

Reader Holds Congress Accountable

It was extremely disappointing to see efforts to repeal the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) provision fail once again. As reported in AAOS Now (May 2014), orthopaedic leadership devoted many resources to support and advise legislators in developing an unprecedented, bipartisan, and bicameral agreement on a permanent repeal of the SGR. Hopes were high that we would finally fix this flawed system and its last-minute “short-term patches” that threaten medical practices and Medicare beneficiaries.

Alfonso Mejia, MD, MPH, is a busy man. The hand specialist is a clinical associate professor in the department of orthopaedics at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), program director and vice head of the UIC Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program, and an active member of the AAOS Diversity Advisory Board. He is also a volunteer SWAT medic. Dr. Mejia provides Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) for the South Suburban Emergency Response Team (SSERT).

Annual Meeting Goes Green in 2015

The AAOS Annual Meeting has been getting greener for years. Mobile apps, electronic messaging, and free Wi-Fi have made going green easier, more economical, and more user-friendly. The green trend started with electronic evaluations and was followed in 2009 with a CD-ROM of the Annual Meeting Proceedings. Today, AAOS members can access the Proceedings on a user-friendly website for up to 2 years after the meeting.

Board Takes Positions on Modular THA, Obesity, Patient Safety

The AAOS Board of Directors, at its meeting in June, adopted a risk stratification algorithm for management of patients with dual modular tapered total hip arthroplasty (THA), as well as several new information statements on issues concerned with patient safety. In addition, position statements on comparative effectiveness research, the need for daily physical activity, and power lawnmower safety were revised.
