Core Values in Action

Having just returned from the AAOS Fall Meeting of the Board of Councilors (BOC)/Board of Specialty Societies (BOS), I'm convinced that there's no better place to see the Academy's core values——in action. These values were written into the AAOS Strategic Plan 20/20, adopted in 2014, and reflect our inviolable guiding principles (Fig. 1). They were embodied in Denver through the interactions, programming, and commitment of the attendees.

Build Needs Brawn

Many hands make light work, so the saying goes. That's especially true for the AAOS Safe and Accessible Playground Build. With hundreds of volunteers (orthopaedic surgeons and their families, allied healthcare and industry partners, and community members) contributing a few hours—or a full day—a playground where children with and without disabilities can have fun together can take shape. In 2000, the AAOS introduced the playground build program in Orlando, Fla.

Tips for Your First AAOS Annual Meeting

The AAOS Annual Meeting draws more than 30,000 participants each year, and offers an enormous variety of opportunities for education, networking, and learning about the latest products and services in the exhibit hall. Such an event can be intimidating to first-time attendees, especially residents. Recently, I spoke with Catherine Logan, MD, MBA, MSPT, the resident member of the Annual Meeting Committee, on how first-time attendees can make the most of the AAOS Annual Meeting. Q.

Treasurer's Report—December 2015

The bylaws of the AAOS direct the Finance Committee to "manage, supervise, and control the financial affairs" of the organization. With the resignation of as AAOS treasurer, the AAOS Board of Directors elected me to serve as your treasurer and chair of the Finance Committee until March 6, 2016. Reflections on Five Decades of Orthopaedic Practice

At a medical society gathering last year, I was asked to share my thoughts on a half-century of medical practice. This article—my chef-d'oeuvre, of sorts—is a compilation of those remarks. The practice, art, and science of medicine have been my life. My grandfather practiced general medicine in a small town in Michigan. As a boy, I often visited his home, which also served as his office.

Increasing Diversity in Orthopaedics

Oversea Opportunities for Orthopaedic Residents

Orthopaedic residents are increasingly interested in oversea rotations. Unfortunately, no guidelines on how to establish these rotations are available and only a few residency programs offer oversea opportunities. Moreover, current Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (AGCME) rules do not permit programs to give credit for oversea rotations. So why should an orthopaedic resident give up valuable vacation time for an oversea rotation?
