New, Focused Advocacy Efforts Will Strengthen the Association

Taking Joint Replacement to the Outpatient Setting: AAOS Course Sets You on the Right Track
On Oct. 18, AAOS will host a new single-day course, “AAOS Outpatient and Rapid Recovery in Total Joint Replacement,” which will address the increasing demand for same-day discharge after total joint replacement (TJR). Expert faculty will provide tips for safely implementing an outpatient rapid recovery program in your own institution or practice.

Governance: What and Why Now?
AAOS is in a time of dynamic change. It is critical for organizations, whether for-profit or not, to regularly evaluate their strategy, governance, and core values to stay relevant. The Board of Directors took a deep dive in the areas of strategy and governance in 2018, culminating in the approval of a new five-year Strategic Plan in December 2018 and adoption of governance principles in September 2018 (both documents are available at www.aaos.org/strategicplan).

NOLC Session Asks, ‘How Do We Define Value in Health Care?’
U.S. health spending was 17.2 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2016, according to data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. But GDP is not the right measure of success in a healthcare system, according to Robert H. Quinn, MD, chair of the AAOS Council on Research and Quality, who said success can be measured only by the value delivered per dollar spent.
