ROSEMONT, Ill. (November 23, 2020)—The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) released a new report based on clinical data from hip and knee arthroplasty patient outcomes as part of the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR), the largest orthopaedic registry in the world based on annual procedures submitted. Based on the sixth AJRR Annual Report on hip and knee arthroplasty data, the new resource highlights the information that is most relevant for patients and the public. It aims to help those outside the orthopaedic profession learn more about hip and knee replacement procedures and better understand how registry data can help to inform decisions and improve patient care.
WHY IS A REGISTRY IMPORTANT?
Registries collect information on patient care, medical procedures, and patient outcomes. Physicians, health care facilities, and device manufacturers use this data to improve the quality of care provided to patients. This information may be used to better understand safety, reduce complications, and decrease costs. Data collection is also valuable for researchers, health care providers, and medical educators, advancing medical education and technology to improve the patient experience and overall outcomes.
HOW PATIENTS BENEFIT
While the Registry serves to help providers, hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers (ASC), and manufacturers improve outcomes and patient care, it is also a resource for patients. AJRR prepared this patient-focused report to show the public what the registry program has learned about hip and knee replacement surgery in the United States, and how that information is being used to continually improve the quality of patient care.
The new report features:
- Illustrated overviews of both hip and knee replacements
- Hip and knee procedure trends (data from 2012 through 2018 including more than 1.5 million procedures from 1,302 institutions across the United States)
- Detailed explanation about diagnosis and reasons for revision surgery
Orthopaedic surgeons, hospitals and ASCs, physicians and other musculoskeletal healthcare providers are encouraged to share this report with their patients. The full report can be downloaded or linked from the AJRR website or the AAOS patient site OrthoInfo.org.
