ROSEMONT, Ill. (August 24, 2022)—The American Spine Registry™ (ASR), a national quality improvement registry for spine care, today announced ZimVie as the latest industry sponsor. ZimVie is a global leader in spine innovation, dedicated to restoring life for patients worldwide by delivering comprehensive cervical, thoracolumbar and biologics solutions, along with training and clinical support for surgeons. The ASR is a collaboration between the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and support from ZimVie will allow the ASR to continue to evolve as a tool to improve the quality of surgical spinal treatments to better meet the needs of all major stakeholders, including physicians, patients, payors, regulatory groups and industry partners.
WHY NOW? RISING PREVALENCE OF SPINE DISORDERS
Degenerative spine disease is one of the most prevalent and costly disease states worldwide with common surgeries including spinal fusion and decompression or discectomy surgery. In the U.S. alone, the total direct cost of treating low-back pain is estimated at $100 billion. Nationally, more than 1.2 million spinal surgeries are performed each year, including spinal fusion and decompression, or discectomy surgery, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
With support from sponsors like ZimVie, the ASR is poised to advance the science of spine surgery and address the challenges of an evolving, value-based care delivery system.
“The key to the future of spine surgery is data collection. With a quality registry like the American Spine Registry, we can integrate sources of data into one consolidative set that can be analyzed and used to help shape patient care. We are pleased to have ZimVie support this mission and further set the stage for improved patient outcomes.”
—Steven D. Glassman, MD, FAAOS, professor of orthopedics, University of Louisville, and ASR executive committee co-chair
“We have witnessed great advances in treating patients with degenerative spine disease over the last two decades. With the support of industry partners, we will be able to help the spine care field build on this momentum and continue to improve quality, develop best practices and close gaps in medical evidence for spine care.”
—Anthony Asher, MD, FAANS, enterprise president, neuroscience institute, Atrium Health and partner, Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates in Charlotte, N.C., AANS president-elect and ASR executive committee co-chair
“Clinical data registries provide unique insights into real-world clinical practice. We are excited to sponsor the American Spine Registry to help physicians better understand the benefits of systematic data collection and to create solutions for patients to better enjoy and experience life.”
—Rebecca Whitney, SVP and President of ZimVie Spine
ABOUT THE AMERICAN SPINE REGISTRY
