AAOS Volunteer Structure

The AAOS has long valued the energy, experience, and commitment of our members in the many volunteer roles in our governance structure.

Our members can address issues that affect orthopaedic surgeons and their patients through service in AAOS Councils and Committees, as well as in state, regional, and specialty societies.

In addition, we have recently launched the AAOS Leadership Institute (ALI) -- a program exclusively for AAOS members that provides training, mentoring, and networking opportunities to help them acquire and enhance the key skills needed to succeed as a volunteer leader at AAOS.

Board of Councilors (BOC)

The Board of Councilors (BOC) represents the grass roots of the orthopaedic profession. BOC members are elected by state and regional orthopaedic societies. BOC members serve as advocates for the practicing orthopaedists in their areas, bringing priorities of their state societies to the leadership of the AAOS which allows AAOS to integrate specific issues into its larger advocacy efforts.

Board of Specialty Societies (BOS)

The Board of Specialty Societies (BOS) brings together leaders of 23 musculoskeletal societies to address issues of mutual concern, such as advocacy, continuing medical education, research, and residency and fellowship issues.
