The orthopaedic community works to raise awareness of the chronic, debilitating, and costly musculoskeletal diseases and disorders afflicting our nation and to request continued support for musculoskeletal research. It is imperative that the orthopaedic community educate members of Congress about the need for increased musculoskeletal research funding in order to improve the quality of life for patients with musculoskeletal diseases and disorders.
The American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has been closely monitoring and advocating during the appropriations process for the Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP). AAOS was successful in getting the program reinstated for FY26 at $20 million and has continued to push for funding of this critical program, successfully securing $20 million for FY27. Restoring this funding after it was cut to $0 in FY25 is a significant win and a testament to the hard work of the many AAOS Fellows who sent letters, shared stories and met with key members of Congress.
PRORP has funded hundreds of cutting-edge studies over the past two decades, bringing innovative medicine to warfighters, veterans, and the broader public.
