How has the AAOS helped you throughout your career?
Early in my career, it was the place (website, annual meeting, courses) to go learn and expand my knowledge and skills across multiple subspecialties. As I have entered the middle of my career, it has offered me opportunities to join committees, expand my leadership skills, and help to contribute in some small way in shaping some of the aspects of the profession.
As an Active Fellow Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
I believe the most valuable resource for me, whether it’s the website or the annual meeting, is the AAOS’s ability to bring together surgeons from various subspecialties. As more of us undergo fellowship training and become more siloed in our smaller groups, the AAOS plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration and discussions across our subspecialties. I hope the organization will increasingly emphasize this aspect, making it a platform for exchanging ideas and knowledge in our respective areas of expertise.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
One of my co-residents once told me in the OR "You’re never as good as you think and you're never as bad as you think.” And I’ve always liked it because it’s a reminder to stay grounded in this job through the ups and the downs.
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
I have an app on my phone that locks all the other apps. That and a good pair of headphones keep me from getting off track and distracted when I have paperwork/research/administrative work I’m supposed to be doing.
What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
Going to bed earlier.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
Running, reading, chauffeuring my daughter around to all her activities.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
I really hate bananas.
