How has the AAOS helped you throughout your career?
The AAOS is an invaluable network that promotes excellence in research, provides high quality educational resources of which the OVT has been particularly helpful, and supports numerous practice management solutions. The Jewel in the crown is the Annual Meeting where I not only learn innovative techniques in this ever-evolving specialty, but have the opportunity to catch up with colleagues and friends from all over the world as we share knowledge and experiences.
As an Affiliate Orthopaedic Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
A picture is worth a thousand words, but the OVT is worth multiples more. As an online resource, it has been my go-to before I tackle a complex case. The ability to visually run through a procedure beforehand will highlight technical pearls that will help for a safer and smoother operation.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
“Never be afraid to ask for help”. This was advice from a Chief resident when I was an intern and it is advice that has struck with me throughout my career. Occasionally, we will come across cases that are rare and complex or be placed in a situation that is out of our comfort zone. Rather than tackle it alone, seek advice. Even a brief phone call to a colleague to run through options will help dramatically; and with Zoom, Facetime, etc, it is easier than ever to share a presentation to get other opinions.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
Before I went to medical school, I was a professional Irish dancer and was fortunate to not only win the World Championships twice but had the opportunity to travel the world performing with Riverdance.
