As an Emeritus Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
The main resources used are the Journals and teaching materials.
If you were mentoring a new member, what important advice would you give them as they progress in their career?
With respect to mentoring the most important thing is A: to have a mentor and B: to use the mentor! Being a mentor is quite gratifying and enjoyable. Younger surgeons starting out often fail to use the knowledge available to them. There is very little that is truly novel and a lot of time can be saved and angst prevented.
What aspect of retirement surprised you the most?
With respect to retirement, the biggest surprise is how little free time you actually end up having. The best advice I got from my peers was to set up outside interests early and certainly prior to retirement.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
I do French language studies and travel. I also do bookbinding and decorating which keeps up my technical skills. Now if I can just get my Sudoku skills up, I would be happy.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
Fun fact: Picking grapes at a vineyard in the Australian summer persuaded me that studying Medicine in a nice, air-conditioned hospital was the preferred job.
