If you were mentoring a new member, what important advice would you give them as they progress in their career?
No matter what area of orthopaedics you pursue, stay passionate about giving your best to each and every patient. There is no greater honor than when a patient and family places their trust in your care. I would also recommend routinely attending the academy and specialty meetings. It is a great way to stay ahead of the game. It also allows you to stay in touch with friends and colleagues.
What aspect of retirement surprises you the most?
You know you’re going to miss work to some degree, but I really miss the daily interaction with my patients and staff. I also miss the camaraderie I developed with the medical staff of the teams I helped take care of. It also took a little longer to develop an everyday routine than I thought, but I finally solved that puzzle.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
I enjoy working out for an hour and a half every day. I enjoy being able to play golf more regularly. My wife and I enjoy being able to travel more, especially with family and friends. I love history and interacting with different cultures. Now that I have more time, I had forgotten how much I enjoy just reading for pleasure. I am also enjoying attending sporting events with friends and family. It is nice not having to work. I can just relax and be a fan.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
When I played college basketball, my nickname was DocWat. Some of my patients would know this one. They would often ask what’s my favorite surgery. My reply would be the surgery where they are 100% happy with the outcome.
