How has the AAOS helped you during residency?
The AAOS has helped me throughout residency by being a crucial resource of educational material. The information spread by the AAOS helps keep me up to date on the latest research, technology, and techniques in the orthopedic community. Additionally, the various educational tools offered have helped guide my education throughout residency.
As a Resident Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
As a resident member of AAOS, the ResStudy application is definitely my most used resource. A staple in my study plan, the application continues to refine my knowledge of orthopedics through the various questions and test taking options. Additionally, it has become a key method of preparation for yearly in-training examination.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
I have been given a plethora of good advice by my attending and senior resident mentors. One that comes to mind is "Never be an ostrich" by my program director, Dr. Joseph Finch. Despite our best efforts, we will all see complications and encounter struggles as orthopedic surgeons. However, it is our duty to our patients to not bury our heads in the sand like an ostrich, but rather attack these complications head on and treat patients to the best of our ability.
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
My go-to productivity trick is to make lists. Lists help me compartmentalize my goals and make them physically visible. It motivates me to complete those tasks so that I am able to cross them off the list. I strive to always add to my list before it ever is fully complete to keep me motivated and productive.
What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
I am currently trying to make running a habit. Despite being an avid runner in the past, it has fallen to the wayside through residency and starting a family. I have started to run again a few times a week with goals to make it a regular routine and engage in races again in the near future.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
In my spare time, the hobbies I enjoy most are playing basketball and traveling. Recently, I played in an adult men's recreational basketball league with a number of my co-residents. Additionally, my family and I have taken trips to Iceland, the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, and Acadia National Park in Maine.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
A fun fact about me that many people do not know is that I have run over 5,000 miles in my life, the equivalent of running from Michigan to Greece.
