Life, Limbs, and a Legacy of Leadership

In this can’t-miss episode, Resident Assembly Executive Committee Chair Rex Lutz, DO, sat down with 2025 William W. Tipton Jr, MD, Leadership Award recipient Steven Gitelis, MD, FAAOS, to learn the keys to becoming an award-winning leader.

The conversation focused on how Dr. Gitelis — like his friend Dr. Tipton — has embodied leadership throughout his career: as the founding father and longtime director of the Rush Sarcoma Program; as the founder the first tissue bank in Illinois (wait until you hear where the first “bone bank” was located); and as a pioneer in musculoskeletal oncology and limb preservation. In addition to sharing his experiences, Dr. Gitelis offered advice to help early-career orthopaedic surgeons build their own legacies of leadership, including a nugget of wisdom courtesy of retired U.S. General “Stormin’ Norman” Schwarzkopf Jr.

Guest: Steven Gitelis, MD, FAAOS, the Rush Medical College Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Oncology and director of the Rush Musculoskeletal Oncology Program

Host: Rex Lutz, DO, AAOS Resident Assembly Executive Committee Chair
