In this episode, host Rex Lutz, DO, is joined by Coleen Sabatini, MD, MPH, FAAOS, recipient of the 2025 AAOS Humanitarian Award. Dr. Sabatini, a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, has worked tirelessly to improve access to high-quality pediatric care around the world in resource-limited settings by focusing on capacity-building.
During the discussion, Dr. Sabatini shares her experiences partnering with and teaching local orthopaedic surgeons to ensure that care is sustainable. "There's such a phenomenal impact that we can make as surgeon educators who are focused on teaching and supporting our colleagues in other countries rather than just flying into places, doing some surgeries, and leaving," she explains. She emphasizes the importance and benefits of humanitarian work for orthopaedic surgeons at every career stage and offers advice on how to get involved and start making a difference during training.
