Breaking Bad News to Patients

In this episode, host Rex Lutz, DO, welcomes Odion T. Binitie, MD, FAAOS, an orthopaedic oncologist at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, for an important discussion about breaking bad news to patients — a task that requires patience, empathy, the ability to read the room, and excellent verbal and nonverbal communication skills.

Given his subspecialty, Dr. Binitie frequently has difficult conversations with patients and their families. But every orthopaedic surgeon will have to deliver unwelcome news at various times in their career, whether it's a life-altering diagnosis, a surgical complication that impacts the patient's outcome, or the patient having to make significant lifestyle changes or miss an important life event due to their MSK condition.

Dr. Binitie will offer advice to help trainees and early-career attendings improve their ability to have these discussions while managing their own emotional response and protecting their mental health.

Guest: Odion Binitie, MD, FAAOS, Professor, Department of Sarcoma, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Morsani College of Medicine, University of South Florida; and AAOS Now Editorial Board member

Host: Rex Lutz, DO, AAOS Resident Assembly Executive Committee Chair
