In this episode, host Ellen Lutnick, MD, welcomes Max Courtney, MD, FAAOS, to advise orthopaedic surgery trainees about how to build a solid fiscal foundation that will set them up for long-term financial success. The discussion will cover debt management (including student loans, bank loans, and credit card debt), budgeting, contingency planning, investing, disability and life insurance, and how to avoid lifestyle creep once you become an attending and your salary grows exponentially.
Dr. Courtney shares his personal experiences navigating debt, explains why he has an accountant but not a financial planner, and offers reassurance that being fiscally responsible during training does not have to mean "living like a resident" 24/7. He also walks through the differences in compensation and lifestyle across academic, private practice, hospital-employed, and hybrid job models and what to evaluate in a first job contract (restrictive covenants, CME budgets, retirement/profit-sharing plans, etc.).
Guest: Maxwell P. Courtney, MD, FAAOS, Adult Reconstruction Surgeon, Rothmann Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital; Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University; Assistant Residency Director; National Service Chief of Joint Replacement
Host: Ellen Lutnick, MD, AAOS Resident Assembly Executive Committee Chair
