Candidate Membership

We are pleased to have you join the AAOS.

Candidate Membership is available to all graduates of U.S./Canadian allopathic or osteopathic orthopaedic residency programs and internationally-trained orthopaedic surgeons licensed and practicing in the U.S. or Canada. This status is held for a 5-year maximum following residency, including post-graduate fellowship(s).

As a Candidate Member, you can:

  • Connect with peers and mentors at the AAOS Annual Meeting. Candidate Members can register in advance for only $100 and on site for $250.

Candidate Membership (ABOS eligible) or Associate Osteopathic Candidate Membership(AOBOS eligible)

Eligibility Requirements: Available to graduates immediately upon completion of approved U.S./Canadian Orthopaedic residency programs who intend to pursue certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) or American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (AOBOS). Compliance with the AAOS Standards of Professionalism.

Application process: During last year of training, watch for email to opt-in via the AAOS Resident/Fellowship Transition Online Form. If you miss the recruitment period, contact our Service Center at or call 1.800.626.6726.

Recruitment period: Between April and September and year-round for non-members who are eligible.

Dues & membership cycle: 2020 dues are $468. Cycle runs on calendar year, January 1 – December 31.

Associate Orthopaedic Candidate Membership (Internationally-trained)

Eligibility Requirements: Available to graduates who received training through international residency programs outside of U.S. & Canada and maintain a full unlimited license to practice in the U.S. Compliance with the AAOS Standards of Professionalism.

Application process: Completed Associate Orthopaedic Candidate application and CV required.  

Recruitment period: Applications are accepted year-round.

Dues & membership cycle: 2020 dues are $468. Cycle runs on calendar year, January 1 – December 31.
