EWI Oversight Chair: Andrew Schmidt, MD

EWI XIII Scientific Director: MAJ Jonathan Dickens, MD

Dates: January 21-23, 2018 / Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill / Washington, DC

Overview of Topics: The 13th annual EWI symposium is the latest installment in the annual symposium series, which has served to define current knowledge and identify areas for future research regarding the management of extremity trauma for NIH, Congress, the Department of Defense, orthopaedic surgeons, researchers, industry, and other relevant government agencies since 2006. For the 2018 event, general sessions will address the current challenges in combat casualty care, readiness, disaster preparedness, and opioid dependence.  These sessions will also seek to identify optimal acute care and rehabilitation pathways by exploring current approaches.  Small group discussions will address multiple topics throughout the meeting, to include optimization of existing registries to prepare for future conflicts, examining capacity for disaster preparedness through education, and patient-specific treatments. This meeting will involve various stakeholders, including the ACA, AMA, OTA, SOMOS, and the Military Health System Strategic Partnership (MHSSP).  New research will be featured throughout the agenda; podium presentations will be selected from the poster abstracts.

Proceedings from the EWI XIII symposium will be published with the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS).
